The Rosebank’s New Executive Chef Introduces Art on a Plate

For The Rosebank’s newly appointed Executive Chef, Andrew Hammond, food is more than just taste it is an art, a combination of individual, edible and visual characters collaborating on a plate. This international award-winning chef and accomplished food stylist, hopes to introduce patrons to cuisine ‘you can eat with your eyes.’

"Using fresh and healthy ingredients we want to create food that is alive with colour, bursting with flavours and delectable to taste," says Hammond, an award winning chef who has represented South Africa at the World Culinary Cup and American Culinary Classics bringing home two gold and two silver medals respectively.

Hammond who prides himself in having 22 years experience in a cross section of cuisine, trained at the Wits Hotel School before embarking on a career that has taken him from the kitchens of some great hotels to the studio where he has created and photographed amazing food and back to the classroom imparting his knowledge as a kitchen management lecturer. He is current chairman of the South African Chefs Association (SACA) Western Cape Committee and has several accolades under his belt.

The Rosebank which has recently undergone a R305 million upgrade has totally revamped its food offering to cater for fine dining, scrumptious breakfasts, quick delicious bites and offers funky bar menus. The hotel boasts two new restaurants, Fresh and Butcher Block, Circle bar, The Rosebank Café and lounge areas which offer delectable snacks and treats.

"The menus at each of our eateries offers an array of fantastic food served in comfortable and stylish surrounds, with the ambience to create the perfect eating experience," says Hammond. "Presentation can make or break a meal, design is as important as taste and flavour."

Using his varied experience and skill, Hammond’s aim is to ensure The Rosebank becomes famed for its delicious and stylish gourmet. His passion for the visual aspect of food saw him establishing Hammond Photography, a food styling and photography studio where he exercises his passion of bringing the two disciplines together.

"Come and feast with your eyes and experience a delightful journey of epicurean delights," says Hammond.

The Rosebank Food Offering FRESH RESTAURANT Fresh boasts a live cooking concept in its open plan kitchen making use of the best and freshest products available. The breakfast is unrivalled and the lunches and dinners are modern yet simplistic, funky, yet elegant. Visually rewarding encounter awaits guests at the open plan kitchen.

BUTCHER BLOCK RESTAURANT Butcher Block offers an intimate and relaxing dining experience. The restaurant offers the most succulent, tender and flavoursome steaks. Expertly aged at controlled temperatures to ensure texture, flavour and colour, the meat is then marinated and grilled to a level of perfection that is hard to emulate. A steak from the Butcher Block is a gastronomic experience that will not easily be forgotten. The menu also offers divine dishes for non meat lovers.

CIRCLE BAR This boutique styled bar is the perfect place to entertain while enjoying one of the cocktails created by South Africa’s top mixologist, Kurt Schlechter. All wines and champagnes on the menu are available by the glass and the revolving art on the display screens completes the experience.

ROSEBANK CAFE Enjoy the best artisan coffee brewed by experts and from the chef, ultra fresh sandwiches and deli-style snacks.

THE ROSEBANK LOUNGE A friendly and warm atmosphere surrounds you at the Rosebank Lounge. Enjoy a glass of the finest wine and enjoy eats and treats from a delightful menu from 06h00 to 01h00 hours.
